A compound is soluble in conc. `H_2SO_4`. It does not decolourise bromine in carbon tetrachloride but is oxidised by chromic abhydride in aqueous sulphuric acid with in two seconds, turning orange solution to blue, green and then opaque. The original compound is

A

a primary alcohol

B

a tertiary alcohol

C

an alkene

D

an ether.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

Solubility of the compound in conc. `H_2SO_4` indicates that it can be alkene. Alcohol or ether. The inability to discharge bromine colour indicates absence of an alkene. Hence the compound is an alcohol which should be primary alcohol because it readily (with in two seconds) oxidized by `CrO_3` in `H_2SO_4`.

A compound soluble in conc. H_(2)SO_(4) . It does not decolourise bromine in C Cl_(4) but oxidised by chromic anhydride in aqueous H_(2)SO_(4) within two seconds, turning organs solution to blue, green and then opaque. The original compound is :

An organic compound (A) with molecular formula C_8H_8 O forms an orange red precipitate with 2,4 -DNP reagent and gives yellow precipitate on heating with iodine in the presence of sodium hydroxide . It neither reduces Tollen's reagent or Fehling's solution , nor does it decolourise bromine water or Baeyer's reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, it gives a carboxylic acid (B) having molecular formulae C_7H_6O_2 . Identify the compound (A) and (B) and explain the reactions involved .

An organic compound [A] with molecular formula C_(9)H_(10)O forms an arage-red precipitate [B] with 2,4 DNP reagent. Compound [A] gives yellow precipiatate [C] on heating wihth iodine in the presence of soedium hydroxide along with a colourless compound [D]. The compound [A] does not reduce Tollen's reagent or Fehling's solution nor does it decolourise bromine water or Baeyer's reagent. On drastic oxidation with chromic acid, compound [A] gives a crboxylic acid [E] having molecular formula C_(7)H_(6)O_(2) . Deduce the strcutres of the organic compounds [A] to [E].

When compound (A) is treated with conc. H_(2)SO_(4) , a reddish brown colour gas (B) is evolved. To this solution, a solution of (C ) is added slowly from the side of the test tube, a blue ring is obtained at the junction of two layers due to formation of (D). Compound (D) has formula :
