`PH_(3)` is a Lewis base but it does not turn red litmus blue or react with HCl (aq), HBr (aq) or HI(aq). It reacts only with anhydrous HCl,HBr or HI. This is because water decompose `PH_(4)X` formed to give back `PH_(3)`.
