ph of a solution of a strong acid is 5.0.What will be the ph of the solution obtained after dilluting the given solution to 100 times ?

The ph of the solution `=5.0,[H_3O^(+)]=10^(-5)molL^(-1)`.
By diluting the solution of 100 times, `[H_3O^(+)]=10^(-7)mol L^(-1)`.
The ph of a solution is expected to be 7. However, it is not because the solution is not completely neutral. The actual ph of the solution depends upon total `[H_3O^(+)]` in solution. This may be clacultaed as follows in solution.

`=10^(-7)+10^(-7)=2xx10^(-7)`
ph `=-log[H_3O^(+)]=-log[2xx10^(-7)][7-log2]`
`=[7.0.3010]=6.6990`
