Will the pH of water be same at `4^(@)C` and `25^(@)C` ? Explain.

Text Solution

pH of water will be different at these temperatures.
Rather PH of `4^(@)C` will be more than pH at `25^(@)C`. Actually for water (neutral):
`[H^(+)] xx [OH^(-)] =K_(w) =10^(-14) " at " 25^(@)C` Similarly, `pH xx pOH = pK_(w) =14 " at "25^(@)C`
`" or "" "pH =pOH =7 " " ( " Water is neutral and" pH =pOH)`
On increasing the temperature of water increases and so is the value of `k_(w).` This means that at lower temperature `("say"4^(@)C)`, the value of `K_(w)` will decrease or `pK_(w)` will be more than 14. this also means that at lower temperature , the value of pH (or pOH) will be more than 7.
