Based on lattice energy and other considerations which one of the following alkali metal chlorides is expected to have the highest melting point

A

LiCI

B

NaCI

C

KCI

D

RbC

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

Among the chlorides of alkali metals the melting point is expected to decreases due to the decrease in the magnitude of lattice enthalpy because cationic size decreases. But m.p. of LiCI is less than that of NaCI because of covalent character.
