When `BCl_(3)` is treated with water, it hydrolyses and forms `[B(OH)_(4)]^(-)` only whereas `AlCl_(3)` in acidified aqueous solution forms `[Al(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+)` ion, Explain what is the hybridisation of boron and aluminium in these species?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

`BCl_(3)` when hydrolysed wth water forms `[B(OH)_(4)]^(-)` ion, in this ion, boron atom is `sp^(3)` hybridised and the shape of the ion is tetrahedral when `AlCl_(3)` is hydrolysed with water in the presense of an acid `[Al(H_(2)O_(6))]^(3+)` ion is formed. in this, alumm um atoms is `sp^(2)d^(2)` hybridised and the shape of the complex ion is octahedral.

AlCl_(3) forms dimer Al_(2)Cl_(6) but dissolves in water forming [Al(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) and Cl^(Ө) ions. Aqueous solution of AlCl_(3) is acidic due to hydrolysis.

Assertion : Aluminium chloride in acidified aqueous solution from octahedral [AI(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) ion. Reason :In [AI(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) complest ion the 3d orbital of Al are involved and the hybridisation state of AI is sp^(3)d^(2) .

Assertion:Boron can only form [BF_(4)]^(-) ,whereas aluminium forms [AIF_(6)]^(3-) . Reason:Ionization enthalpy increases across a period.

Assertion (A): Solution of AICI_(3) in water is neutral. Reason (R) : [AI(H_(2)O)_(6)]^(3+) is formed.
