When acidulated water (dil. `H_(2)SO_(4)` solution) is electrolysed, with pH of the solution be affected? Justify your answer.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since `(H^(+))` remains constant during electrolysis, the pH of the solution will not be affected. The reactions taking place at the two electrodes are listed ahead :
A anode : `2H_(2)O to O_(2)+4H^(+)+4e^(-)`
At cathode : `4H^(+)+4e^(-) to 2H_(2)`
