Two platinum electrides are dipped in an aqueous solution of copper sulphate blue in colour. A current is passed through it.
(a) What will happen on the two electrodes ?
(b) What will happen to the colour of the solution ?
(c ) Predict the nature of the solution left in the electrolytic cell.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) Copper will be deposited on the cathode i.e., the electrode connected to the negative terminal. Oxygen gas `(O_(2))` will evolve at the anode.
(b) The blue colour of the solution will slowly disappear and it will become colourless.
(c ) The solution left in the electrolytic cell will be acidic (aqueous solution of `H_(2)SO_(4)`). For details, consult text part.
