Why does leather get hardened after tanning ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The animal hides are of colloidal nature. For example, when a hide with positively charged particles is soaked in tannin which contains negatively charged colloidal particles, mutual coaguation occurs and this results in the heardening of leather. The process is knowns as tanning. Chromium salts have also been used in place of tannin.
