Adsorption of a gas on the surface of solid is sgenerally accompanied by decrease in entropy but still it is spontaneous in naturre. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Actually adsorption is of exothermic nature and `DeltaH` is negative. Since entropy `(DeltaS)` decreases, `TDeltaS` is also negative at a given temperature, the magnitude of `DeltaH` (favourable factor) is generally more than that of opposing factor `(TDeltaS).` As a result, free energy `(DeltaG)` is also negative or adsorption is of exothermic nature.
