The experimentally determined N-F bond l...

The experimentally determined `N-F` bond length in `NF_(3)` is greater than the sum of the covalent radii of `N` and `F`. Assign reason.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Both nitrogen and fluorine atoms have very small size. Therefore, there is high electron density between the two atoms. This leads to repulsion in the bonded electrons and as a result, bond length of N-F bond is more than the sum of the covalent radii of the two atoms.
