Oxides of phosphorus have cage like and ...

Oxides of phosphorus have cage like and not open structures. Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Multiple bonding is not possible in phosphorus atoms due to its large size but instead it forms single bonds and in the molecular form, phosphorus exists as `P_(4)`. Its oxides `(P_(4)O_(6) " and " P_(4)O_(10))` are expected to have cage like structures because `P_(4)` molecule has also similar structures.
