Sulphur dioxide acts as bleaching agent ...

Sulphur dioxide acts as bleaching agent in the presence of moisture. Discuss.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the presence of moisture, sulphur dioxide is oxidised to `H_(2)SO_(4)` liberating nascent hydrogen. The latter reduces coloured substances due to reduction.
`SO_(2)+2H_(2)O to H_(2)SO_(4) +2 [H]`
Coloured substance `+2 [H] to ` colourless (bleached)
However, the bleaching by sulphur dioxide is only temporatory. When the bleached article is exposed to air, it again gets coloured due to oxidation.
