Oxygen molecule has the formula O(2) whi...

Oxygen molecule has the formula `O_(2)` while sulphur is `S_(8)`. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In the molecule of oxygen, the two oxygen atoms are linked to each other by double bond (O=O) i.e., one sigma bond formed by axial overlap and one pi-bond formed as a result of sidewise overlap. Therefore, oxygen exists as a diatomic molecule. Multiple bonding is not possible in sulphur due to its large atomic size. The sidewise overlap is not effective. Each sulphur atom is linked to two sulphur atoms on either sides resulting in `S_(8)` molecule with puckered ring structure.

Why oxygen molecule is diatomic whereas sulphur molecules is octa atomic?

Write the molecular formula of sulphur molecule.

Sulphur is more stable in the form of rhombic sulphur which contains S_(8) rings. This on heating converts into vapour that consists of S_(2) fragments. The correct statements about these S_(8) and S_(2) molecules. (A) S-S bond length is more in S_(8) than in S_(2) . (B) S_(8) ring is diamagnetic whereas S_(2) is paramagnetic. C) in S_(8) and S_(2) mlecules there are two lone pairs of electrons on each sulphur atom

Oxygen exists as a gas, while sulphur exists as a solid Why ?

(a) Define gram molecular mass of a substance. How much is the gram molecular mass of oxygen ? (b) If sulphur exists as S_(8) molecules, calculate the number of moles in 100 g of sulphur. (S = 32 u)

Show that the rms velocity of O_(2) molecule is sqrt(2) times that of SO_(2) . Atomic weight of sulphur is 32 and atomic weight of oxygen is 16.

The vapour pressure of CS_(2) at 50^(@)C is 854 "torr" and a solution of 2.0 g sulphur in 100 g of CS_(2) has vapour pressure 848.9 "torr" . If the formula of sulphur molecule is S_(n) , then calculate the value of n . (at mass of S = 32 ).
