`KHF_(2)` is a well known compound whereas `KHCl_(2)` does not exist. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Hydrofluric acid exists in dimeric form `(H_(2)F_(2))` due to the presence of hydrogen bonding and it exhibits dibasic nature. It can form an acid salt such as `KHF_(2)` on reacting with base like KOH. It ionises as `K^(+) " and " HF_(2)^(-) (F___H-F)^(-)`. Hydrochloric acid exists in monomeric form (HCl) since no hydrogen bonding is present. It therfore, cannot form a salt of the type `KHCl_(2)`.
