A greenish yellow gas 'X' is passed through water to form a saturated solution. The aqueous solution on treatment with silver nitrate solution gives a white precipitate. The saturated aqueous solution also dissolves magnesium ribbon with the evolution of a colourless gas 'Y'. Identify gases 'X' and 'Y'.

The greenish yellow colour of the gas 'X' suggests that it is chlorine. It dissovles in water to give a mixture of HCl and HClO acids. The acids HCl gives a white precipitate of silver chloride with silver nitrate solution. It also dissolves magnesium ribbon to form magnesium chloride and hydrogen gas is released. This means that the gas 'Y' is hydrogen. The reactions involved are as follows :
`underset((X)) Cl_(2)+H_(2)O to HCl+HClO`
`AgNO_(3)+HCl to underset(("White ppt."))(AgCl)+HNO_(3)`
`Mg+2HCl to MgCl_(2) +underset((Y)) (H_(2))`
