Copper (I) is diamagnetic while copper ...

Copper (I) is diamagnetic while copper (II) is paramagnetic . Explain.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The configuration of copper in the two oxidation states is :
`Cu(I):[Ar]^(18)3d^(10),Cu(II):[Ar]^(18)3d^(9)`
Cu(I) has all filled orbitals and is diamagnetic in nature. On the other hand , Cu(II) has one half-filled orbital and paramagnetic in nature.
