`CuSO_(4).5H_(2)O` is blue in colour while `CuSO_(4)` is colourless. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In hydrated copper solution, `H_(2)O` molecules act as ligands and as a result, crystal field splitting takes place. This leads to `d-d` transition responsible for blue colour of the crystals. In the anhydrous state (`CuSO_(4))`, no such splitting is possible and therefore, the salt is colourless.
