If angular momentum is conserved in a system whose moment of inertia is decreased will its rotational kinetic energy be conserved?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Given: `L=I omega=` Constant
Formula, Rotational K.E. is given by
`K=1/2 I omega^(2)=1/2 (I^(2)omega^(2))/I=1/2 . (L^(2))/I`
For constant L
`K prop 1/I`
So when the moment of inertia decreses, the rotational K.E. Increases. Hence rotationa K.E. is not conserved.

The angular momentum of a system of particles is conserved:

A disc of moment of inertia la is rotating in a horizontal plane about its symmetry axis with constant angular speed co. Another discinitially at rest of moment of inertia I, is dropped coaxially on to the rotating disc. Then, both the discs rotate with same constant angular speed The loss of kinetic energy due to friction in this process is,
