Two satellites are at different heights from the surface of earth. Which would have greater velocity?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Orbital velocity,
`v_(0)=sqrt((GM)/(R+h))`
Clearly, the satellite revolving at smaller height h from the surface of the earth will have a greater velocity.

A geostationary satellite is orbiting the earth at a height of 5R above the surface of the earth, R being the radius of the earth. Find the time period of another satellite at a height of 2R from the surface of the earth.

As you have learnt in the text, a geostationary satellite orbits the earth at a height of nearly 36,000 km from the surface of the earth. What is the potential due to earth’s gravity at the site of this satellite ? (Take the potential energy at infinity to be zero). Mass of the earth = 6.0 xx 10^(24) kg." radius" = 6400 km .

A particle of mass 'm' is kept at rest at a height 3R from the surface of earth , where 'R' is radius of earth and 'M' is mass of earth .The minimum speed with which it should be projected , so that it does not return back ,is (g is acceleration due to gravity on the surface of earth )

Consider earth satellites in circular orbits. A geostationary satellite must be at a height of about 36000 km from the earth's surface. Will any satellite moving at this height be a geostationary satellite? Will any satellite moving at this height have a time period of 24 hours?
