A gas mixture consists of 2 moles of O2 ...

A gas mixture consists of 2 moles of `O_2` and 4 moles of Ar at temperature T. Neglecting all vibrational modes, the total internal energy of the system is :

A

9 RT

B

4 RT

C

15 RT

D

11 RT

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

The internal energy of 2 moles of `O_2` atom is
`U_(O_2)=(n_1f_1)/2RT=2xx5/2xxRT`
`U_(O_2)=5RT.`
The internal energy of 4 moles of Ar atom is
`U_(Ar)=(n_2f_2RT)/2=4xx3/2xxRT`
`:.` The total internal energy of the system is
`U= U_(O_2)+U_(Ar)`
`= 5 RT + 6RT = 11 RT.`
