What are degrees of freedom?...

What are degrees of freedom?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The degrees of freedom of the system are the minimum number of independent coordinates needed to specify the position and configuration of a thermo-dynamical system in space.
Eg:
(i) A practical moving in space has three degrees of freedom.
(ii) similarly practice moving over a plan has two degrees of freedom.
(iii) free practical moving along x-axis needs only one coordinate to specify it completely . So its degree of freedom is one.
If we have a number of gas molecules in the container , then the total number of degrees of freedom is F = 3N .
But, if the system has kyon number of constraints ( restrictions is motion ) then the degrees of freedom decreases and it is equal to f = 3N - q where N is the number of particles and q are constraints.
