What is the necessary condition for the formation of stationary waves ?

A stationary wave cant' be formed from two independent waves travelling in a medium in opposite directions. Acutually stationary wave in produced when a progressive wave and its reflected waves are superposed. It can be produced in a finite medium which has its boundaries.
