If the pitch of the sound of a source appears to drop by 10% to a moving person, then determine the velocity of motion of the person. Velocity of the sound `=330ms^(-1)`.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Apparent frequency heard by the person is given by,
`v'=((v-v_(0))/(v))v`
(or) `(v')/(v)=(v-v_(0))/(v)`
But `(v')/(v)=(90)/(100)=(9)/(10),v=330ms^(-1)`
`:.(9)/(10)=(330-v_(0))/(330)`
(or) `330-v_(0)=(9)/(10)xx330=297`
`:.v_(0)=330-297=33ms^(-1)`
As the pitch of the sound appears to decrease, so the person is moving away from the observer.

A train moving with a velocity 30ms^(-1) blows a whistle of frequency 516 Hz. Find the pitch of the sound heard by a passenger in another train approaching the first at a speed of 15ms^(-1) , velocity of sound = 330ms^(-1) .

A source and observer are approaching one another with the relative velocity 40ms^(-1) . If the true source frequency is 1200 Hz, deduce the observed frequency under the following conditions: (i) All velocity is in the source alone. (ii) All velocity is in the observer alone. (iii) The source moves in air at 100ms^(-1) towards the observer, but the observed also moves with the velocity v_(0) in the same direction. (Velocity of sound 340 m/s)
