No two electrons in an atom will have all the four quantum numbers same. This statement is known as

A

Hund's rule

B

Aufbau principle

C

Uncertainty principle

D

Pauli's exclusion principle

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
D

(d) According, to Pauli's exclusion principle "no two electrons in an atom can have the same values of all the four quantum numbers."
In `1s^(2)`
for I electron `n=1, l=0, m=0, s=+(1)/(2)`
for II electron `n=1, l=0, m=0,s=-(1)/(2)`
It means if the values of n, l and m are same, then the value of spin quantum number must be different, i.e. +1/2 and -1/2.

For ant two electrons in an atom, the set of all four quantum numkber can be same

STATEMENT-1: An orbital cannot have more then two electrons and they must have opposite spins. STATEMENT-2: No two electrojns in an atom can have same set of all the four quantum numbers as per Pauli's exclusion principle.

Statement-I : No two electrons in an atom can have the same values of four quantum number. Because Statement-II : No two electrons in an atom can be simultaneously in the same shell, same subshell, same orbitals and have same spin.
