Propene reacts with HBr to give isopropy...

Propene reacts with HBr to give isopropyl bromide but does not give n-propyl bromide.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The addition of HBr on propene takes place in accordance to Markownikoff's rule, i.e., negeative part of the additive goes to that carbon atom which is linked with lesser number of hydrogen atoms. The addition of an electrophile involves the intermediate formation of a more stable carbonium ion.`(CH_(3))_(2)CH^(+)` is more stable than `CH_(3)CH_(2)CH_(2)` carbonium ion.
