How is the structure of an alkene determined?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Ozonolysis is the best method for locating the double bond position in unknown alkene. An alkene is treated with ozone in an inert solvent to form an ozonide. The ozonide is treated with `Zn//H_(2)O` to obtain the carbonyl compounds. The structure of the alkene. The following ponts should be kept in mind while deciding the structure of the alkene.

2. When only one aldehyde or one ketone is obtained, the alkene is symmetrical with respect to double bond.
3. The structures of carbonyl compounds are written in such a way that the carbonyl groups face each other.
(A) - `R_(1)-overset(R_(2))overset(|)C=O`
(B ) `O=overset(R_(4))overset(|)C-R_(3)`
4) The =O of both the compounds are removed and linked through a double bond. This is the structure of unknown alkene.
`R_(1)-overset(R_(2))overset(|)C=overset(R_(4))overset(|)C-R_(3)`
`R_(1), R_(2), R_(3), R_(4)` are either hydrogen atoms or alkyl groups or both.
