Sodium hydroxide is manufactured by the electrolysis of a strong solution of sodium chloride (called brine). As a redult, chlorine (X) is evolved at anode while hydrogen at cathode. For details, consult section 2.13. Chlorine reacts with lime water containing salked lime to form bleaching power (Y)
`underset(("Lime Water"))(Ca(OH)_(2)) + underset((X))(Cl_(2))` to underset("Bleaching powder"(Y))(CaOCl_(2))+H_(2)O`

In one of the industrial processes for manufacture of sodium hydroxide a gas X is formed as by product. The gas X reacts with lime water to give a compound Y which used as a bleaching agent in chemical industry. Identify X and Y giving the chemical equation of the reactions involved

A gas X reacts with lime water and forms a compound Y which is used as a bleaching agent in chemical industry. Identify X and Y . Give the chemical equation of the reaction involved.

When electricity is passed through a comon salt solution, sodium hydroxide is produced along with the liberation two gases 'X' and 'Y'. The gas 'X' burns with a pop sound whereas 'Y' is used for disinfecting drinking water. (i) Idenrify X and Y. (ii) Give the chemical equation for the reaction stated above. (iii) State the reaction of Y with dry slaked lime.

(a) When ethanoic acid reacts with sodium hydrogencarbonate then a salt X is formed and a gas Y is evolved. Name the salt X and gas Y. Describe an activity with the help of a labelled diagram of the apparatus used to prove that the evolved gas is the one which you have named . Also write the chemical equation of the reaction involved (b) Give any two uses of ethanoic acid.

A water insoluble substance 'X' on reacting with dilute H_(2)SO_(4) released a colourless and odourless gas accompanied by risk effervescence. When the gas was passed through water, the solution obtained turned blue litmus red. On bubbling the gas through lime water, it initially became milky and the milkiness disappeared when the gas was passed in excess. Identify the substance 'X' and write the chemical equations of the reactions involved.

A compound (X) with the molecular formula C_6 H_10 O_4 is a neutral liquid. On heating (X) , under reflux with aqueous sodium hydroxide and distilling the product. A colourless liquid is obtained which on warming with iodine and aqueous sodium hydroxide gives a pale yellow precipatate (Y) . The residue in the distilling flask is the sodium salt of an acid (Z) , which decolourises aqueous acidified potassium permaganate (VII) on heating. Identify (X), (Y) , and (Z) and give all the reactions involved.

A metal X ,which is used in thermit process , when heated with oxygen gives an oxide Y which is amphoteric in nature . Identify X and Y. Write balanced chemical equation of the reaction of oxide Y with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide .
