Bond dissociation enthalpy of F-F bond i...

Bond dissociation enthalpy of F-F bond is less than that of Cl-Cl bond. Explain.

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
Due to smaller size, the lone pairs of electrons of the F-atoms repel the bond pair of the F-F bond.In contrast, because of comparatively larger size of Cl atoms, the lone pairs on the Cl atoms do not repel the bond pair of Cl-Cl bond.As a result, F-F bond energy is lower than that of Cl-Cl bond energy.
