A compound AB crystallizes in bcc lattice with unit edge length of 380 pm. Calculate (i)The distance between oppositely charged ions in the lattice.
(ii)Radius of `A^+` if radius of B is 175 pm

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

In bcc, Z = 2 and `4r = sqrt(3)a`
(i) The distance between oppositely charged ions is 2r.
`therefore 2r=(sqrt(3)a)/(2)`
`therefore 2r=(sqrt(3)xx380)/(2)=1.732xx190=329.1` pm
(ii) `r_(A)^(o+)=2r-r_(B^(-))`
`r_(A^(+))=329.1-175=154.1` pm
