A gas 'X' is dissolved in water at '2' bar pressure. Its mole fraction is 0.02 in solution. The mole fraction of water when the pressure of gas is doubled at the same temperature is

A

0.04

B

0.98

C

0.96

D

0.02

Text Solution

The correct Answer is:
C

From the equation, we know that `(p_(1))/(p_2)=(x_1)/(x_2)`
where, `p_(1)`=initial pressure, `p_(2)`=final pressure, x=mole fraction of solute
Given that, `p_(1)`=2 bar, `p_(2)`=4 bar, `x_(1)`=0.02 `x_(2)`=?
Now, putting the values in equation
`(2)/(4)=(0.02)/(x_2)Rightarrowx_(2)=0.04`
In a solution, `chi_(solute)+chi_(solvent)=1`
or, `0.04+chi_(solute)=1`
or, `chi_(solvent)=1-0.04=0.96`
