Wurtz reaction of bromoethane gives n-...

Wurtz reaction of bromoethane gives n-butane . Sodium salt of X on heating with sodalime also results in n-butane . Compound X is

A

`CH_(3) CH_(2) COOH`

B

`CH_(3)(CH_(3)) _(3) COOH`

C

`CH_(3) (CH_(2))_(4) COOH`

D

`CH_(3) CH_(2) COOH`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
B

In Wurtz reaction two molecules of bromoethane react with 2 molecules of sodium to form n- butane
`CH_(3) - CH_(2) - Br + 2Na + Br- CH_(2) -CH_(3)`
`-2NaBr to CH_(3) - CH_(2) CH_(2) - CH_(3)`
n- butane can also be obtain when sodium salt of pentanoic acid ( x) gets heated with sodalime . The reaction is given as under :
`CH_(3) (CH_(2)) COOH overset(naOH) (to)`
`CH_(3) CH_(2) CH_(2) CH_(3) + Na CO_(3)`
Hence `X ` is `CH_(3) CH_(2) CH_(2) COOH`
