A gun fires at an angle `30^@` with the horizontal and hits a target at a distance of 3 km . Can another target at a distance of 5km be hit by changing the angle of projection but keeping the velocity of projection unchanged ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Horizontal range ,R=`(u^2 sin 2alpha)/(g)`
In the first case, 3=`(u^2 sin(2xx30^@))/(g)=(u^2)/(g)(sqrt(3))/(2)`
or, `(u^2)/(g)=2sqrt(3)`
If the velocity of projection is unchanged, the maximum horizontal range for `alpha=45^@`, is
`R_(max)=(u^2sin(2xx45^@))/(g)=(u^2)/(g) =2 sqrt(3)`
=`2xx1.732 =3.464 km`
So, a target at a distance of 5 km cannot be hit.

Two houses stand just on the opposite sides of a road of a village. A ladder that stands against the wall of the first house is at a distance of 6 metres from the house and makes an angle of 30^(@) with the horizontal line. But if the ladder stands against the wall of the second house keeping its foot at the same point, it makes an angle of 60^(@) with the horizontal line. (a) Find the length of the ladder. (b) Calculate the distance of the foot of the ladder from the foot of the wall of the second house. (c) Find the width of the road. Find the height where the top of the ladder is fixed against the wall of the second house.

A projectile is fired from the surface of the earth with a velocity of 5m *s^(-1) and angle theta with the horizontal . Another projectile fired from another planet with a velocity of 3 m*s^(-1) at the same angle follows a trajectory which is identical with the trajectory of the projectile fired from the earth. The value of the acceleration due to gravity on the planet is (in m*s^(-2) ) (given g=9.8 m*s^(-2) )

The equation of the trajectory of a projectile on a vertical plane is y= ax-bx^2 , where a and b are constants, and x and y respectively are the horizontal distances of the projectile from the point of projection. Find out the maximum height attained by the projectile, and the angle of projection with respect to the horizontal.
