How can a body be cut easily with the sharp edge of a knife, but not with its blunt edge?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The working of a knife depends on the pressure, i.e., the force per unit area. We know that pressure `(p)=("force(f)")/("area(A)")`, so keeping F constant, if we decrease A, p will increase.
Now, the surface area of the blunt edge of a knife is more than that of the sharp edge. As a result, for the same force, the blunt edge produces. For this reason, a body can be cut easily with the sharp edge of a knife.
