A plate of area 100 `cm^2` is floating on oil of depth 2 mm. The coefficient of viscosity of oil is 15.5 poise. What horizontal force is required to move the plate horizontally with a velocity of 3 cm. `s^-1`?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The viscous force, `F=etaA(dy)/(dx)`
Here, `A=100cm^2, eta=15.5` poise.
`dv=3 cm. s^-1 and dx=2 mm = 0.2 cm.`
`therefore " " F=15.5xx100xx(3)/(0.2)=23250` dyn
So the required horizontal force is 23250 dyn.
