A porous container is filled with a gas mixture. Which gas would leak faster from the container when it is placed in vaccum?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

IF the temperature is constant ,rms speed of gas molecules is inversely proportional to the molecular weight of the gas i.e, `c prop 1/sqrtM`.
So, the rms speed of the lighter gas molecules is higher than that of heavier gas molecules. As a result, the lighter gas would leak faster through the pores of the container.

Two heat proof containers of volumes 1L and 2L are connected by a tube.Keeping the valve attached to the tube closed, the 1st container is filled with nitrogen at 0^@C and at 0.5 standard atmosphere pressure, and the 2nd container with argon at 100^@C and 1.5 standard atmosphere pressure. The temperature of the gas mixture becomes 79^@C when the valve is opened, find the pressure of the gas mixture.

Final pressure is higher than initial pressure of a container filled with an ideal gas at constant temperature. What will be the value of equilibrium constant ?

A closed vessel of fixed volume is filled with 3.2g O_(2) at a pressure of P atm and at a temperature of TK. The container is then heated to a temperature of (T+30)K. to maintain the pressure of P atm inside the container at (T+30)K, a certain amount of gas is removed from the container. the gas removed is found to have a volume of 246 mL at 1 atm and 27^(@)C . calculate T.
