In the Galapagos Islands, Darwin observed the diversity of particular group of black birds that are later called Darwin.s Finches.
There were many varieties of finches in the same island and all varieties evolved on the land itself. From the original seed - eating features, many other forms with altered beaks evolved and this helped the finches to become insectivorous and vegetarian finches.
The process of evolution of different species in a given geographical area starting from a point and literally radiating to other areas of geography or habitats is called adaptive radiation. Darwin.s finches represent one of the best examples for adaptive radition.
