Mitochondria are known as the powerhouses of the cell because they contain enzymes that are needed fpr stepwise oxidation of food stuffs (carbohydrates, fats) present in the cells to `CO_(2)` and water. Oxidation of food releases energy which is used to form high-energy ATP molecules. ATP is used to bring about energy-requiring activites of the cell.
