Distinguish between sound waves and radi...

Distinguish between sound waves and radio waves of same frequency, say 15kHz.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Following are the points that distinguish a sound wave from a radio wave
`(i)` Sound waves cannot travel through free space while radio waves can
`(ii)` The speed of sound in air is `332m//s` while of radio waves `3xx10^(8)m//s`.
`(iii)` With rise in temperature the velocity of sound increases while that of radio waves does not change
`(iv)` Sound waves can be detected by the human ear if its frequency lies between `20Hz-20kHz` while radio waves of any frequency cannot be
`(v)` Sound waves can never be polarised (excluding the transverse mode in solids) while radio waves can always be polarised.
