(i) System: A system is defined as any portion of matter under thermodynamic consideration, which is separated from the rest of the universe by real or imaginary boundaries. eg. Water taken in a beaker, balloon filled with air, seed, plant, flower and bird.
(ii) Surroundings: Everything in the universe that is not the part of system and can interact with system is called as surroundings.
