A Fortin's barometer has a main scale and a vernier scale to measure the atmospheric pressure. The main scale coincide with 50 vernier divisions, find the least count of the instrument in Pa.`(Given pressure exerted by 76 cm column of mercury = 10^(5) Pa)`

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Length of one main scale divison= 1mm.
Number of vernier scale divisions, N=50.
`therfore` Least count of the vernier scale
`= ("1mm")/50= "0.02 mm" = 2 xx 10^(-3)"cm"`
Given 76 cm column of mercury exerts 10^(5) Pa pressure.
`therefore` Pressure exerted by `2 xx 10^(-3)` cm column of mercury
`=(2xx 10^(-3) xx 10 ^(5))/(76)pa`
`=(50)/(19)pa=2.63 "Pa"`
