An unmagnetized steel bar buried in eart...

An unmagnetized steel bar buried in earth in the north -south direction would, after a few days, exhibit magnetic properties, making it a weak magnet. Explain by giving reasons how this is possible. In what way will the effect be different if the steel bar is to be placed above the surface of earth ?

Assertion : When a bar magnet is freely suspended, it points in the north-south direction. Reason : The earth behaves as a magnet with the magnetic field pointing approximately from the geographic south to north.

A short bar magnet placed in a horizontal plane has its axis aligned along the magnetic north south direction. Null points are found on the axis of the magnet at 14cm from the centre of the magnet. The earth's magnetic field at the plane is 0*36G and the angle of dip is zero. What is the total magnetic field on the normal bisector of the magnet at the same distance as the null points (i.e. 14 cm) from the centre of the magnet? (At null points, field due to a magnet is equal and apposite to the horizontal component of earth's magnetic field).

IF a magnetic compass and a dip circle are taken to the magnetic poles of the Earth, what would be the directions of their needle ? Explain giving reasons.

A short bar magnet is placed with its north pole pointing north. If magnetic moment of magnet is 0*4Am^2 and horizontal component of earth's magnetic field is 0*4 gauss, what is the distance of neutral point from the centre of the magnet?
