`KMnO_(4)` does not act as oxidising agent in the presence of HCl. Why ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

HCl cannot be used for making acidified `KMnO_(4)` as oxidising agent, since it reacts with `KMnO_(4)` as follows.
`2MnO_(4)^(-) + 10 Cl^(-) + 16H^(+) rarr 2Mn^(2+) + 5Cl_(2) + 8H_(2)O`
