The basicity of aniline is less than tha...

The basicity of aniline is less than that of cyclohexylamine. This is due to

A

`+R` - effect of `-NH_(2)` group

B

`-I` effect of `-NH_(2)` group

C

`-R` effect of `-NH_(2)` group

D

hyperconjugation effect

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

The correct Answer is:
A

`-NH_(2)` has a `+R` effect, it donates electrons to the benzene ring. As a result of resonance, the lone pair of electrons on the N atom gets delocalized over the benzene ring and thus it is less readily available for protonation. Hence aniline is a weaker base than cyclohexyl amine.
