(a) Draw the structure of the following compounds:
(i) Ethanoic acid
(ii) Butanone.
(b) why is conversion of ethanol to ethanoic acid considered an oxidation reaction?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

(a) `underset("Ethanoic acid")(H-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-overset(O)overset(||)(C)-H" "underset("Butanone")(H-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-overset(O)overset(||)(C)-underset(H)underset(|)overset(H)overset(|)(C)-H)`
(b). When ethanol `(C_(2)H_(5)OH)` changes with ethanoic acid `(CH_(3)COOH)`
* there is a decrease in the number of hydrogen atoms by two.
* There is an increase in the number of oxygen atoms by one.
therefore, the conversion represents an oxidation reaction.
