A compound 'X' is formed by the reaction...

A compound 'X' is formed by the reaction of carboxylic acid `C_(2)H_(2)O_(4)` and an alcohol in the presence of conc. `H_(2)SO_(4)`. This alcohol on treating with alkaline `KMnO_(4)` gives the sae carboxylic acid used in the reaction. Give the name structure of carboxylic acid and alcohol. Write the reaction involving formation of 'X'.

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Since the alcohol on oxidation with alkaline `KMnO_(4)` gives the carboxylic acid 'X' with molecular formula `C_(2)H_(2)O_(4)`, this means that the alcohol has also two carbon atoms. The carboxylic acid 'X' and the alcohol
`underset((C_(2)H_(2)O_(4)"Ethane dioic acid (Oxalic acid)")){:(COOH,),(|,),(COOH,):}" "underset((C_(2)H_(6)O_(2))" Ethane diol (Ethylene glycol or glycol)")({:(CH_(2)OH,),(|,),(CH_(2)OH,):}` ,brgt The chemical reaction involving the formation of X is
`underset("Released from oxidising agent")(C_(2)H_(6)O_(2)+4(O)to)underset((X))(C_(2)H_(2)O_(4))+2H_(2)O`
