While sewing, a person often wets the end of a thread before, trying to put it through the eye of the needle. Why?

When the ends of a thread are wet, a water film is formed over the fibres of thread. Due to surface tension, these fibres cling together and hence, area of cross section decreases and it becomes easier to put the thread through the needle.
