A boat carrying a large number of stones...

A boat carrying a large number of stones is floating in a water tank. What will happen to water level if the stone are unloaded into water?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

m = mass of stones, M =mass of boat
Case (i) M + m = Total mass of boat and stones
Volume of water displaced `= V=(M+m)/p`
(where p is density of water)
Case (ii) When stones are unloaded in water.
Then let `V_(1)`= Volume of water displaced by stones. If `sigma="density of stone"`
Then `V_(1)=m/sigma`
Similarly if `V_(2)=` Volume of water displaced by boat
Then `V_(2)=M/p`
Total volume of water displaced `=V_(1)+V_(2)`
`V.=m/sigma+M/p`
As `sigma gt p`
`therefore V. lt V`
Volume of water displaced in case (ii) `lt` volume of water displaced in case (i)
The level of water in tank will fall down.
