Why mercury is used in barometer instead of water ?

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Pressure exerted by a liquid column= p= hpg
Therefore, h =p/pg
For water `p= 1.01 xx 10^5, p= 1000 "kg/m"^3, g= 9,8 "m/s"^2` we get h =10.3 m
For mercury we have `p=13.6 xx "1000 kg/m"^(3), h=0.76 m`. Thus tube required for water barometer is much larger than the tube required for mercury barometer. Therefore, mercury is used as a barometric substance for measuring pressure.
