Guess a possible reason why water has a much greater dielectric constant (=80) than say, mica(=6).

Text Solution

Verified by Experts

Water molecules have permanent dipole moments and generate large electric field due to polarisation when placed in external electric field. Electric field generated due to polarisation is opposite to the applied field and dielectric constant is defined as:
`K=(E_(0))/(E )=(E_(0))/(E_(0)-E_(P))`
Thus, water has a high value of dielectric constant (K).

Water has relatively large dielectric constant. Explain?

Assertion (A) : NaCl is less soluble in heavy water than in ordinary water. Reason (R) : Dielectric constant of ordinary water is more than that of heavy water.

When air in between the plates of a capacitor is replaced by mica of dielectric constant 6, its capacity

find the fraction which is as much greater than 4/7 as it is less than 5/6

A parallel plate capacitor with air between the plates has a capacitance C. If the distance between the plates is doubled and the space between the plates is filled with a dielectric of dielectric constant 6, then the capacitance will become.
